I deleted Twitter last year. Watching people I thought I knew becoming radicalised after the October 7 attacks was mind blowing. From BLM in their bios to ‘kill Arabs’ was an eye opening experience.

I realised that the whole stand and fight nonsense was just that, nonsense. The place is a sewer. Do I want to spend my time in a sewer? Nope.

Been on Bluesky for over a year now. The lessons I learnt from my disastrous time on Twitter I employ there. So far so good.

One thing I would say is that there is a concerted effort to keep the RW off there and I’m perfectly happy with. Am I in a bubble? Yes. Do I care? No!

For a while I thought it was better to stay, because I resented the idea of surrendering the space to trolls and bigots from the far right. I also used it to keep in touch with mates who live in a different part of the country, and I felt I could be selective enough to pick and choose the articles I read which were linked from Twitter. But, like a lot of people I’ve migrated over to Blue Sky and a lot of those mates have done the same in recent days. In the end the battle just isn’t worth it.

But I haven’t deleted my account just yet..

I stay on Twitter because I want to know what the far right are up to. A lot of my contacts are now on BlueSky and I particularly like the ability to nuke transphobes over there. I think the stance of not posting articles onto Twitter, but keeping journalists on it is OK. It’s a lesser form of not advertising.

I joined Twitter a few years ago to publicise a book. And stayed with it partly for your reason - to know what the other side is saying - but mainly to pick up invaluable insights, revelations and information from this side. These are fast drying up, wilth the gap increasingly filled by right wing sludge spilling over from US politics and tacky little videos about nothing. May have to jump ship before the rats make a complete takeover...

In 2025 and beyond, Trumpist policies are going to be deeply unpopular. A Truss-like economic shock is very likely. Along with further voter suppression, Twitter will be used as a tool to keep the cultists in line, in order to avoid what would otherwise be a blue wave in the '26 midterms. Even if there is a "liberal" presence still on Twitter, or journalism that challenges this far right regime, the maga cult members won't see it. It's a very worrying scenario. If Trumpism isn't soundly rejected in 2026 the fascist takeover will be complete.

I’m staying on Twitter for now. I have friends and contacts on there who have no other social media account. Also, I have over 6000 followers there but only 400+ on BlueSky. More likes on my posts on Bsky, though.

Out of interest, what are your top three sources of traffic?

Email, Google, and the Substack app are the top three at the moment. Twitter is still in fourth but BSky is creeping up.

I think I've had twitter for a combined total of a month, once was a few years back when I signed up for a competition, the other was out of curiosity following Elrons buyout.

I couldn't really stomach either time. I found that it was turning me into a more loathsome person.

But eh, I just deleted Bluesky as well, besides Instagram and Facebook (and this I suppose), I hope that's me finally had my fill of doomscrolling and looking at people I want to punch through the screen.
