When I was a teenager I always wanted to be someone I wasn’t and actually did want to be a cat. But that was teenage angst and a liberal sprinkling of imagination. I honestly can’t believe all the fuss over such a non-story.

I saw the story and thought: "I bet that didn't happen the way they've written it up" and, wouldn't you know, it didn't. You have to treat nearly everything in the Telegraph like that these days.

Thanks for having the patience to wade through all that nonsense! I saw the story discussed on BBC Politics Live (!) in the context of young people socially transitioning and whether teachers should be obligated to out them. I shouldn't be surprised really, but I was, because it was SO obviously a ridiculous story but the BBC just showed the headline, entirely credulous, and asked the panel to discuss it.

Somewhere, deep in the bowels of CCHQ’s “strategy” unit, there’s a few chaps and chappesses who all know each other from something to do with horses/genetics/both that just spitball ideas that the stupidest multiverse version of Charlie Brooker wouldn’t even touch.

Every one of those excerpts made me nearly laugh out loud on the train, I'm sorry to say. As you indicate near the end, it's actually far from funny. The Telegraph is an utter trashfire that needs to be put out of its misery.

Isn’t this just another tired baa baa greensheep yarn? Pathetic, mean-spirited and unfunny. About what you’d expect from the Forgers’ Gazette. The decline of the Telegraph is something else. Since Max Hastings’s day it has crashed on down. The last big lurch was when Peter Oborne got tired of being told what to write by the advertising department, opted for freedom and was allowed to be a decent human being again.

It reminds me of the stories about "well if a woman can marry a woman, why can't a woman marry a dog? Hey?" And there would be some news story about a random person who allegedly did in fact want to marry a dog or a wall or a goat or whatever. And it was usually made up, or exaggerated, or just a random individual with nothing to do with LGBTQ people getting married.
