Great debate and well done Mic. Goodwin likes flying off at tangents continuously.
I have two points:
Goodwin talks about the left playing “the man” when surely the most egregious example of man playing in our lifetime’s has been the protracted media lynching of Jeremy Corbyn which still carries on on a daily basis.
My second point is about Britain’s low productivity. Truss revealed the rights thinking on this and it’s very lazy and ideological. Press a few taxation buttons and the markets will take care of everything.
I remember reading a research summary a few years ago ( I don’t remember the source) but its conclusions of the causes of our productivity also showed the way towards overcoming them by at least identifying the main causes. Which were: Britain’s under investment in infrastructure such as roads, communication networks, R&D, staff training and education, including schools, and finally, our managers were generally less knowledgeable and capable than, say, German managers in equivalent roles.
Meanwhile, Patel, and then Braverman, stated that they wanted to attract the brightest and best from abroad which , I always thought, sounded like an admission of many of the above points/ failures. It was, as if they considered, and accepted that we were the dullest and worst.
Good debate I kept thinking if every time Goodwin said 'the new woke elite' he had instead said 'the Jewish elite' we would immediately know where he was coming from. I do not believe he is sincere he must know how power works and that it does not come from University Graduates even if they are from Oxbridge! At the centre of Goodwin's thesis is anti-woke, this fake hysteria re woke is a deliberate distraction from the failure of the Neo-Liberal project which we have suffered from since the 80's led by Regan and Thatcher who were mouthpieces for Hayek, Freedman et.al. The failure of Neo-liberalism was dramatically illustrated by the brief reign of Truss and Kwarteng who did us all a favour by demonstrating the final death of this disaster of an economic theory. Goodwin et.al are trying to resurrect it in another guise, of anti-woke, classical liberalism etc., Mic did a good job of demolishing some of his hypocrisy.
