1. The soft reboot...
The countdown to 'Breaking' is on. Will it break me too?
Previously: The Sun and Shrödinger's benefit claimants
This is the 941st edition of this newsletter. I first wrote one of these emails on June 17 2020, three months into lockdown. 30 people read it. The seventh instalment — on the subject of Brendan O’Neill — was the first to reach more than 2,000 views. In that first year, I wrote an edition a day and sometimes more than one.
Since then, the publishing cadence has ebbed and flowed. In the first few months of this year, I’ve been averaging one email a week, but that’s going to change.
On June 12, my first book is being published. Breaking is, inevitably, about the media, how it works and why it doesn’t. In the run-up to publication, I’m going to go back to the old ways — from today, I’ll be publishing an edition every day (excluding weekends and bank holidays). Rather conveniently, that equates to 50 editions concluding on the day the book drops.
I haven’t planned what I’ll write in all of the 49 other instalments in this series. I’ll try to be topical but I also want to respond to reader suggestions. What do you want me to write about that I’ve not covered before or haven’t looked at for ages?
Thank you for being a subscriber and sticking with me. I hope you’ll enjoy this series. Hit the button below to suggest a topic.

Good luck with the book launch, Mic. Looking forward to reading it.
I’d be interested in your take on the press’ and broadcast media’s ambivalence around the rule of law, especially in the light of Marine Le Pen’s conviction for embezzlement, and the apparent ‘threat to democracy’ her possible disbarment from running for president poses.
I'd love a little coverage on anything that can be done to make the media landscape a little better (a tall order, I know).
